Online course on the use of legal timber in architecture, construction and design
This course provides basic information on legal and sustainable timber, Vietnam’s timber industries, development potential and opportunities for the design and interior industries. The course consists of 7 lessons, with a duration of about 150 minutes. Each lesson includes a short video (about 5-7 minutes), PowerPoint presentation, and/or accompanying reference materials. This course is designed to raise awareness of legal timber and timber products as well as the benefits from using sustainable timber materials. The course also aims to encourage young architects, engineers, construction managers and interior designers in using timber sustainably in architecture, construction and design.
Timber is widely used in construction and interior decoration because of its special characteristics. Timber is a material which is aesthetic and suitable for both modern and traditional designs. Nowadays, with the development of modern timber technologies, timber material may have similar efficiency to concrete but it is a green, more sustainable and more environmentally friendly alternative. If iron and steel materials proliferated in the 19th century and the 20th century, then the defining material of the 21st century is timber. The course will go on to explore the nature of timber and how we can use it sustainably. The course will also endeavor to answer the following questions:
- What are characteristics of timber?
- What is legal timber?
- How can we use timber without negative effects on the environment and the ecosystem?
- What are trends of using timber in construction, architecture and interior industries now and in the future?
- What are opinions of architects about using legal and sustainable timber?
This course is designed for students at universities/colleges/institutes of construction, architecture, interior design and other young architects and engineers who are interested in timber material.
