Report on workshop “International regulations on the origin of timber and the impacts on timber businesses in Lam Dong province”:

On December 4, 2017, the Center for Education and Development (CED) collaborated with the Center for People and Environment of the Central Highlands (COPE) to organise a workshop on “International regulations on the origin of timber and the impacts on timber businesses in Lam Dong province” in Da Lat. This training workshop is part of the “Promoting private sector engagement with the Voluntary Partners Agreement implementation process in Vietnam” project, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN).

The event was held with 35 participants representing the Lam Dong Department of Industry and Trade, the Department of Forestry, the Provincial Forest Protection Department, timber enterprises (including: processing, producing and trading), the Radio The Voice of Vietnam Newspaper (VOV) and the Bank Newspaper. The workshop focused on: introducing the important contents of the VPA, the principles and criteria for legal definition of timber (LD) and guiding businesses to comply with the agreement, assessing their readiness, updating the questions about procedures of timber origin control in Lam Dong.

Despite this being a one-day workshop, businesses and stakeholders were provided with a lot of useful information on the concepts, requirements and importance of VPA/FLEGT. The participants also recognized that the access to information related to VPA/FLEGT was very limited and therefore many enterprises did not meet the legal requirements.
