On December 8, 2017, the Center for Education and Development (CED) collaborated with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry to organise a forum on “Enhancing the cooperation between enterprises and forestry and customs to promote Vietnam timber trade” in Da Nang (Rosaleen Hotel, No. 36 Chu Van An, Phu Hoi, Hue City). This event is part of the “Facilitating the participation of the private sector in the negotiation process of implementing the Voluntary Partnership Agreement” project, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO-UN).
The forum was held with 50 participants representing the Forest Products Association of Binh Dinh (FPA), the Handicraft and Wood Industry Association of Ho Chi Minh City (HAWA), the Vietnam Timber and Forest Product Association (VIFORES), the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Da Nang, the Forest Protection Department of provinces in Central Vietnam, the Customs Department of Central Vietnam’s provinces, and the wood processing and exporting enterprises in Central Vietnam’s provinces. The forum focused on: (i) updating enforcement requirements related to timber origin, origin and trade; (ii) discussing how to enable businesses to have control to ensure legal timber is used throughout the supply chain; (iii) discussing the role of the forest ranger and customs authorities in the future regarding legal timber control; (iv) proposing to increase cooperation and support between enterprises, customs and forest rangers to ensure that timber and timber products produced and processed in Vietnam are legally obtained.
As a result, many ideas were shared between representatives of agencies, enterprise associations, timber enterprises and NGOs. Representatives also proposed recommendations for the project and related agencies in order to create favourable conditions for enterprises to properly implement the requirements of the VPAs/FLEGT.
