Discussions between the Vietnamese Government and EU authorities over the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade – Voluntary Partnership Agreement (FLEGT/VPA) will soon conclude.
In August the Center for Education along with various partners implemented their final workshop of the “Capacity building of business associations and media to engage in FLEGT to provide information on FLEGT and related issues” which aimed to move the process forward. Due to recently imposed regulations by the EU, authorities from EU nations now require exporters of timber and timber products to be able to provide evidence and proof of the legality of its source. This has resulted in the price Vietnam receives for its timber exports decrease as a section of the cost must go towards risk assessment and ensuring the timber is legal.
With the implementation of FLEGT/VPA Vietnam will be able to help remove the barrier to exportation of timber products to the EU by the provision of FLEGT licenses. The FLEGT/VPA is expected to be signed by the end of 2015.
